Position: Urban Farming Apprentice
Position Starts: May (flexible starting dates)

Description: The Seattle Urban Farm Company summer apprenticeship is ideal for someone excited about growing food and interested in learning the technical aspects of growing it in an urban environment. As an apprentice, your primary focus will be installing and maintaining vegetable gardens in and around the city of Seattle. Main areas of work could include seeding and grow-out of vegetable transplants in a greenhouse or outdoor nursery; all aspects of installing organic vegetable gardens in city properties including clearing sod and old landscaping, amending soils, installing drip irrigation systems, constructing raised beds using lumber or landscaping rock, and seeding and transplanting vegetables; and weekly maintenance on these gardens including scouting for and controlling pests and diseases organically, fertilization, weeding, and harvesting. We strongly encourage apprentices to focus in on particular areas of interest, and there will be opportunities for research and implementation of projects in these areas.

Qualifications:
Applicants should:
-be prepared to work as part of a crew
-be prepared for long days and physically demanding work
-be prepared and excited to learn new information and apply it to their daily work
-any experience in organic gardening and/or farming, carpentry, landscaping, and hardscaping is helpful but not necessary

Other Information: Start and end dates are somewhat flexible, but we ask applicants to be ready to begin work in April or May and to fulfill at least a 12 week commitment. You will be asked to work approximately 32 hours a week (3 to 4 days per week). The apprenticeship is unpaid, but we strongly encourage applicants to seek funding through alternate sources. We value time off and schedule flexibility, and can work with you if you have specific schedule requirements. Please keep in mind that daily work can be physically demanding- be prepared to be tired and dirty this summer. We’re excited to hear from you!
