Episode 58: Spinach

August 18, 2017 hilary dahl
Spinach_Seattle Urban Farm Co.

Spinach is an annual that grows to maturity in about 25-40 days. It is a hardy cool-season crop that does best at temperatures of 60 to 65ºF, but can withstand temperatures as low as 20ºF. That means that spinach thrives when planted early in the spring for a late spring harvest, and late in the summer for a fall harvest.

April 13, 2016 hilary dahl
Buying Healthy Vegetable Transplants_Seattle Urban Farm Co.

It’s the time of year when vegetable transplants (or “starts) begin to show up at nurseries, hardware and grocery stores, and plant sales. Transplants are wonderful for many reasons. First, certain crops are difficult to grow from seed and will simply perform better if transplanted.

Plant Winter Squash In The Spring

April 7, 2015 hilary dahl
Winter Squash On a Trellis_Seattle Urban Farm Co.

One of the most common requests we get when helping to plant fall gardens is the request to plant winter squash. As summer starts to come to an end, many people start to imagine themselves curling up with a good book and a warm cup of squash soup come fall. Unfortunately, by late summer we’ve already missed our opportunity to plant winter squash.

How to Build a Bamboo Tri-pod Trellis: A Photo Tutorial

March 10, 2015 hilary dahl
Bamboo Pea Tri-pod in Vegetable Garden_ Photo by Seattle Urban Farm Co.

Many snap pea and snow pea varieties can easily grow to reach 7' tall so building a structure to support your pea vines is crucial. One of the most inexpensive, and easiest ways to create a tall semi-permanent trellising structure for your peas is with 8' bamboo poles (about $5 each at your local hardware store) and garden twine. The following photos show the process:

Garden planning this long holiday weekend? Consider planting “like with like”! Grouping crops by plant family, growth habit, and lifespan is a simple and effective way to plan and high yield vegetable garden, especially if you’re growing in a smaller space! More in this in my upcoming webinar, Plan and Prep Your Edible Garden (link in bio🌱)! You can also check out our books or the Encyclopedia Botanica podcast, I’ve decided some past episodes to this topic! Cheers ✌️

Winter is flying by at a lightning speed and suddenly my Plan + Prep Your Edible Garden webinar is next weekend! A chunk of this seminar is focused on annual edible garden design basics including: site selection, irrigation, pathways, and building material recommendations. If you’re thinking about building your own garden this year, it’s well worth your time to think through these elements so you can set your garden and yourself up for success!! I’ll also cover soil preparation, organic fertilization, methods for planning a low maintenance annual garden and annual crop management. I hope you can join me, but if not, do be sure to think through the elements I listed earlier before building your edible garden this year! We also have lots of inspiration here and on our blog! 🌱{webinar link in profile!}

Summer dreamin’ in this snowy day! 🌸These are just good old Sensation cosmos. Nothing fancy, but we grow them every year because they’re so reliable. They end up maturing into really large plants though (3 1/2-4 1/2 feet tall and wide). Over the years I’ve tried a ton of different varieties that are bred to be smaller. I’m always disappointed by these hybrids because they either 1) end up giant despite claims to only grow to 24 inches or so OR 2) aren’t as prolific and don’t flower as vigorously for as long. So...what do you have for me? Anyone know of a great dwarf cosmos variety? If so, please share your secrets with us!!!
